Burst Pipe: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

A burst pipe is one of the few plumbing problems where the first few minutes really matter.

1. Shut off the main water valve

Find your main shutoff — usually near the water meter or where the line enters the house — and turn it off before anything else. This stops the flow immediately, no matter which pipe burst.

2. Cut power to affected areas if needed

If water is pooling near outlets, switches, or fixtures, shut off power to that area at the breaker panel.

3. Drain remaining water from faucets

Once the main is off, open a few faucets to drain the water still in the lines — this relieves pressure and reduces leaking.

4. Move valuables out of the way

Get furniture, boxes, and electronics away from the water. Every minute counts.

5. Call for emergency repair
