Burst Pipe: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes
A burst pipe is one of the few plumbing problems where the first few minutes really matter.
1. Shut off the main water valve
If safe and you know how, close the property’s water shutoff. Stay out of water near electrical equipment. Do not enter a flooded crawl space or touch a wet electrical panel.
2. Cut power to affected areas if needed
Stay out of standing water near electrical equipment. Do not touch a wet panel or operate switches in an affected area; have emergency responders or a qualified professional make the area safe.
3. Drain remaining water from faucets
Once the main is off, open a few faucets to drain the water still in the lines — this relieves pressure and reduces leaking.
4. Move valuables out of the way
Get furniture, boxes, and electronics away from the water. Every minute counts.
5. Call for emergency repair
